Sins of a Solar Spymaster
I’d say most people online know about the MMO EVE Online. Quite simply, it looks like one of the most realistic virtual worlds ever created. If you want simplicity, you can go to WoW or any myriad of others. You want to be famous? EVE is the place for it.
Sins of a Solar Spymaster is a weekly (or there abouts) editorials done by one of EVE’s most infamous player: The Mittani. Even those of you who know nothing about EVE will enjoy these tales of woe and destruction from the original EVE Online spy. Responsible for more misery to those who oppose his Alliance than any number of ships, The Mittani’s understanding of both the game and human nature prove a very enjoyable read. Plus, if you really want to play the game and become famous (or infamous as the case may be) then Mittani also manages to provide some very useful pieces of advice.
Shadow Warfare
Shadow Warfare is a relatively small online RPG. Currently in its third round, Shadow Warfare boasts a dedicated player base, as well as one of the friendliest and most involved admin teams I’ve ever seen in an online game. You can rarely login to the game without there being at least one member of the development team (Greyian, zero, will and Dytalus/Vastari) also online.
The game is fairly simple to get to grips with, although at the beginning it can be difficult getting enough gold to buy yourself some decent equipment. This can be easily overcome by playing smart and not throwing yourself headfirst into levelling up. The game provides a method of increasing your stats without fighting by training. You can use your turns to train, and depending on how many battles you’ve won, you earn more points per each turn you use. The starting point is 0.1 points per turn.
You earn 25 turns and a full heal every reset, which start at 00:00 in game time and occur every six hours. Turns can be used either training, fighting demons in the Battlegrounds or by fighting other players (referred to as Shadow Warriors). To increase your odds of winning, you can buy equipment in the town of Rethan. Equipment currently includes your main weapon and armour, a sidearm (such as a dagger) and a shield. Alternatively, you can use two one-handed weapons instead of a one-handed sword and shield. Or you can use a two-handed weapon. Combine this with the four stat types and you can customise your fighting style as much as you like.
Of the stats, Agility and Endurance are possible the two most important. The stats are as follows:
- Strength denotes how much damage you inflict each time you hit, augmented by your weapon(s).
- Defense redcues the damage you suffer, enhanced by wearing armour.
- Agility will increase the number of times you hit your opponent before they can strike back against you. A higher agility rating will also help you to hit your opponents with critical hits and will enable you to evade some of the attacks.
- Endurance wears down every time you attack in a battle. After a certain number of strikes you’ll have to rest to recuperate, so having a high endurance is essential.
- Health is lost every time you’re hit in a battle (duh). It can be replenished either at a reset or by visiting the hospital.
There are also several “elements” which have varying uses. Iron, Steel and Zirconium are all special minerals which you can earn through your workers. They are used to upgrade weapons, but can also be sold to other players to earn you gold. They are not of any major significance at the beginning of the game, but they are crucial to your success as the game progresses and you become more powerful. Workers are earned everytime you level up and are assigned to various tasks.
You can earn extra bonuses from referring your friends to the game. They must first reach some basic requirements however. Once your referral reaches Level 5, with 2 hours online time, you will receive 2 diamonds and 10 turns. What’s more, you’ll also earn 50 gold and 2 iron every single day, for EACH referral. If you can refer a bunch of dedicated players, there’s no reason that you can’t use these rewards to drive yourself to the top of Shadow Warfare.
Diamonds are the rarest item in the game, gained only when you donate, refer or subscribe. They can be traded for gold, iron or turns in the Architect’s Office. They can also be used to purchase special Diamond Equipment, Shops and Mines. Perhaps most importantly, they can be used to set up your own cult.
Cults are basically Shadow Warfare’s equivalent of a Guild, and allow people to share a communal armoury and wage war against other cults.
In short, Shadow Warfare is actually a very good game. Although with the recent reset not all the old gimmicks and mechanics are back in yet, the admin team are very friendly and helpful. Need gold? They’ll send some from their own accounts if they can spare it. definitely recommend it.
